Development and the Environment

Respect for the environment and an understanding of the impact that a site has on the surrounding community should be central to all project management.

Good environmental practice is about more than recycling or reducing noise but about considering the impact of all aspects of our work and developing a solid strategy based on workable principles and achievable targets.

Sustainable working practices take time, effort and training to make sure that all employees know your policy and understand the reasons behind it.

Recognising this, the Jersey Construction Council has developed some questions and objectives to encourage members to aim for excellence in all aspects of their daily working practice.

Think about Sustainability

• Are you reducing your use of raw materials, energy and supplies?
• Could you increase your use of renewable systems and materials?
• Have you tried to find the right materials from sustainable sources?
• Have you tried to source materials locally to reduce transportation?
• Do you work with your suppliers, contractors, customers and clients to use products and services in an environmentally-sensitive way?

Look at Waste Management

• Develop a plan for waste management and recycling on all sites which encourages:
• Selection of low waste materials and processes
• Separation of waste for on-site and off-site re-use or recycling
• The use pre-fabricated techniques if appropriate
• Work with designers and suppliers to use standard production timber sections for joinery to reduce unnecessary waste

The Environment and the Community

• Find out what the latest codes of practice and environmental legislation means for you.
• Plan all construction work to reduce dust and nuisance for site neighbours and make sure they know what work is planned.
• Be open to the idea of discussions about environmental issues and developments in practice.
• Make sure machinery is maintained to a high standard to ensure that pollution and emissions are kept at the lowest possible levels.

Training, Staff and Health & Safety

• Develop a training programme which encourages the recruitment of local people.
• Keep all health and safety management systems up to date and maintain a regular and robust training programme
• Work towards a zero accident culture on site
