GUEST SPEAKER FOR GALA EVENT ANNOUNCED
At the launch of the 2011 JeCC Awards today, Thursday 19 May, the Chairman of the Awards Sub-Committee, David Morris, announced that Sir Clive Woodward will be the guest speaker at the gala event to be held on Saturday 17 September.

Sir Clive was appointed head coach in 1997 transforming the team to become world number 1 ahead of their World Cup win in 2003. Sir Clive’s visit could not be better timed as it coincides with the second week of the 2011 Rugby World Cup which kicks off on 9 September in New Zealand. England’s first fixture is against Argentina in Dunedin on 10 September.
Now as Director of Sport for the British Olympic Association, Sir Clive is engaged with all key stakeholders in British Olympic sport as they aim to deliver a successful Olympic Games in London next year.
Sir Clive began his rugby career at university, after which he joined first Harlequins and then Leicester. He represented England on 21 occasions and toured twice with the British Lions.
Retiring after an outstanding international career, he worked in Sydney where he became captain of the Manly club. Returning to England five years later with his wife and family, he established his own successful leasing company and began his remarkable career as a rugby coach with the nearby Henley club.
After coaching London Irish and Bath and the England Under 21s, he was appointed by the Rugby Football Union as England Rugby's Head Coach in 1997.
He set about transforming the team by challenging the traditional practices of previous set-ups, introducing business principles, setting long term goals, paying attention to detail and planning the personal development and coaching of individuals in the basic skills, tactics and strategy of the game.
The team’s unprecedented success under Clive led to a No 1 world ranking and ultimately winning the greatest prize in rugby, the World Cup, in November 2003. On his return from the World Cup victory he was rewarded with a Knighthood for services to rugby
Jersey Construction Council Awards Committee Chairman David Morris said that he was delighted that Sir Clive had accepted the invitation to be guest speaker at the awards gala evening on 17 September.
‘We were looking for a truly inspirational individual and speakers really do not get much better than a British Olympic Association Director and the coach behind England’s most successful rugby team of recent years,’ said Mr Morris.
‘Sir Clive has been an imaginative and inspirational leader in both his sporting and business roles and has been driven by a desire to achieve excellence. He is a compelling and entertaining speaker and we look forward to welcoming him to the Hotel de France for the awards.’
